Are Steering Wheel Covers Safe? What Every Driver Should Know

Quick answer: a steering wheel cover is a comfort and appearance product. It is not a safety device, and we don't sell it as one. The things that actually matter are whether it fits properly, whether it stays put, and whether it interferes with your wheel's controls. Here is the honest breakdown.

What a cover actually touches

A standard cover wraps the outer rim of the wheel — the part your hands hold. It does not reach into the centre of the wheel, and it does not change anything mechanical.

Where your airbag sits, and how any aftermarket accessory interacts with the systems in your specific vehicle, is a question for your vehicle's manufacturer. Read your owner's manual, or ask your dealer. We are a cover shop; that call is not ours to make, and anyone who tells you otherwise is overselling.

The four things that actually matter

1. Fit

This is the one that counts. A cover that is the right size sits tight and stays where you put it.

Measure straight across the middle of your wheel, edge to edge — not around the curve. Most standard wheels fall between 14.5" and 15.5".

Two cases where a standard cover is simply the wrong product:

  • Yoke-style wheels. A standard cover will not fit. Don't force it.
  • Flat-bottom wheels. The cover will sit slightly loose across the flat section. That's geometry, not a defect — but if a loose section bothers you, this isn't the right product for your car.

2. Grip

A cover that has been fitted properly does not move under your hands. A cover that has been stretched onto the wrong size wheel, or one that's too big, can shift — and a shifting wheel cover is a genuine annoyance and a distraction.

If your cover rotates or slides when you turn, it's the wrong size. Take it off. Sizing is not a detail here; it's the whole thing.

3. Thickness

A cover adds material between your hands and the wheel. Some drivers like the extra grip and the softer feel. Some find it changes the steering feel in a way they don't like.

This is preference, not safety. If you want the wheel to feel exactly as it came from the factory, don't fit a cover. There's no wrong answer — just different tastes.

4. Controls and buttons

Many wheels have buttons, scroll wheels or paddles built into the spokes. Before you commit to a cover, check that it does not sit over or crowd the controls you use.

Fit the cover, then sit in the car and try every button on the wheel. It takes ten seconds and it settles the question.

What we do not claim

We would rather lose a sale than make a claim we can't back up. So, plainly:

  • We do not claim a cover makes driving safer.
  • We do not claim it prevents accidents, improves reaction time or reduces driver fatigue.
  • We do not claim a specific temperature reduction, in degrees or otherwise. Anyone quoting you a number is guessing.
  • We do not claim universal fit. "Universal" is the word that causes most returns in this category.
  • We do not give advice about your airbag system. Check your manual or ask your dealer.

What we do say: a well-fitted cover protects the wheel from further wear, feels good in your hands, and looks like something you chose on purpose. That's the product. It's a good product. It just isn't a safety device.

How to fit a cover so it stays put

  1. Measure first. Edge to edge across the middle. If you land outside 14.5"–15.5", stop and message us.
  2. Warm it slightly if the material is stiff. A few minutes in a warm car helps.
  3. Start at the top. Seat the cover at 12 o'clock and work it down each side evenly.
  4. Work in small pushes, not one big yank. Pulling hard on one side stretches that side only.
  5. Check the spokes. The cover should sit flat with no bunching where the spokes meet the rim.
  6. Test it. Turn the wheel lock to lock with the car stationary. It should not rotate or slide.

If it moves after that, it's the wrong size. Send us a photo and your measurement — we'll make it right.

Frequently asked questions

Are steering wheel covers safe?

A properly fitted cover is a comfort and appearance product that sits on the rim of the wheel. We don't make safety claims about it. Check your owner's manual for anything specific to your vehicle.

Can a steering wheel cover slip while driving?

Only if it's the wrong size or fitted badly. A cover that matches your wheel's diameter seats tightly. If yours rotates or slides, take it off — it's the wrong size.

Will a cover interfere with my steering wheel buttons?

It can crowd them if it's oversized. Fit the cover, then test every control on the wheel before you drive.

Does a cover affect my airbag?

That's a question for your vehicle's manufacturer. Read your owner's manual or ask your dealer. We don't advise on airbag systems.

Is a thick cover better?

That's taste, not safety. A thicker cover changes how the wheel feels. Some drivers love it; some prefer the factory feel.

What if my wheel is a yoke style?

A standard cover won't fit. Don't force one on — it won't stay put.
